Scope and Contents

Collection consists of studies and plans and related materials used in City of Dallas park planning from the mid-1960s to 2004. The collection was organized by the Dallas Park and Recreation Department to support research and planning for Dallas parks and park facilities.

The City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department provides leisure, recreational and cultural activities for the citizens of Dallas and the general public and maintains more than 21,000 park acres through the Dallas park and recreation system, which includes 17 lakes, 62 miles of jogging and bike trails, 41 recreation centers, 1,020 sports complexes, 490 playgrounds and picnic areas, 21 pools, six 18-hole golf courses, two driving ranges and the 100-acre Dallas zoo. The City's first two parks, City Park (purchased in 1876) and Fair Park (purchased in 1904) predate the organization of the Park and Recreation Department.

This collection contains printed publications produced by and/or presented to the Dallas Park and Recreaction Department. A minimum quantity of reports were internally produced. The bulk of the collection’s documents were produced and published by consultants and non-govermental entities for the department's planning committees, focusing on three major areas: the Trinity River area, Fair Park, and a proposed Town Lake project. Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, financial records, conference studies, reports and studies, plans and drawings, photographs, books, and printed materials documenting the proposals, acquisition, planning and design, and history of the parks and centering primarily on the Trinity River and Fair Park between 1964 and 2004.
