Scope and Contents

Collection documents the former town of Renner, Texas. Renner was a town east of State Highway 289 in southwestern Collin County and was established in 1888 as a stop on the Cotton Belt line, officially known as the St. Louis Southwestern Railway of Texas. The community was named for John A. Renner, a railroad engineer in charge of developing townsites along the Cotton Belt line. A post office was established in 1888 to serve the fifty residents of Renner, and within twenty years the town became a commercial and community center for area farmers. In 1915 its population reached 300, a figure that was not surpassed until 1965.

The Great Depression and the development of mechanized farming contributed to a sharp decline in population, and by 1947 Renner had 100 residents and two businesses. After World War II the Texas Research Foundation, a nonprofit agricultural research organization, selected Renner as the site of its agricultural laboratories. From 1950 to the late 1960s the population of Renner grew steadily, reaching 394 in 1969 and about 500 in 1977 according to City of Dallas estimates. A subdivision of Renner, Preston Villa, became disenchanted with some of the substandard services provided by the city government and retaliated with a petition requesting consolidation with the City of Dallas. Dallas citizens voted in favor of consolidation on April 2, 1977 and the area immediately benefited from improved police and fire services, new streetlights, street improvements, and maintenance.

Although the main residential portion of Renner mostly comprised a small triangle between McCallum Boulevard and the Cotton Belt railway, the agricultural portions of Renner extended North to Plano and East to include the agricultural research station, which is now a campus of the University of Texas at Dallas. To preserve some of Renner's history, the 1888 Renner School was rescued from demolition and moved to Dallas Heritage Village.

Collection contains town council minutes, correspondence, legal materials, ephemera, and annexation records detailing the 1977 consolidation with the City of Dallas.
