Scope and Contents

Collection consists of a spiral bound copy of the 1956 Annual Report of the Traffic Control Department for the city of Dallas.  The document was released on February 20, 1957. W. H. Carsten was the director.

The Traffic Control Department was organized as a separate unit in 1944, although a traffic engineer position served several departments between 1939 and 1944. The department's activities included studying traffic conditions, planning for new thoroughfares, and recommending necessary regulations, procedures and controls to move traffic. It also marked traffic zones, installed signals, and maintained police and fire signal systems. During the 1950s its activities surged as a major thoroughfare system was developed and U.S. Highway 75, better known as Central Expressway, was built. Traffic control is currently under the management of the Street Services Department.

The report is unusual in having a large number of photographs of major Dallas intersections and streets, such as Jefferson Avenue looking west at the intersection of Zang Boulevard.
