Collection consists of bound and unbound brochures explaining the first recycling plan of the Department of Street and Sanitation Services.
Originally part of the Public Works Department, the Department of Street and Sanitation Services was created in 1972. It was assigned the responsibilities of collecting and disposing of municipal solid waste, and the maintaining and cleaning of drainage facilities, streets, and rights-of-way. Sanitation Services was made into a separate department in 1998. Its mission is to protect the public health and the quality of the environment through the efficient collection, recycling and disposal of municipal solid waste. In 2006 the department initiated a comprehensive recycling program that is aimed at recycling about 43,000 tons of trash annually.
